Covid-19 Update

An update from Caleb Bowman

July 10, 2020

Hey Calvary Baptist Church, on Friday, July 10, the emergency public health order for Sedgwick County requiring masks in public, went into effect. This temporary, emergency order is lawfully issued. In accordance with Romans 13:1-7 and 1 Peter 2:13-17, Calvary Baptist Church will be following this order and will ask everyone who attends to please wear a mask.

1 Peter 2:13 says, “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors.” V. 15 says why we should obey the government – “For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”

This is a matter of testimony. Our obedience is right because it shows a good testimony to the community.

While this order is not enforceable by criminal charges, fines, or civil penalties, we should still obey. We should not obey just to avoid punishment. We should obey because it’s the right thing to do.

I understand that wearing a mask and seeing others wear masks can cause anxiety and frustration. It makes communication difficult and diminishes the joy of fellowship because you cannot see a smile or notice the fullness of someone’s expression. We can overcome these obstacles to non-verbal communication by being more friendly with our words and intentional about speaking up so others feel welcome.

So this Sunday, please wear a mask when you come to church. There will be masks available for those who do not have their own. And of course we will continue streaming the service on line for those who would prefer to participate in the service from home.

It is my hope and prayer that all of us at Calvary Baptist Church will continue to show love and grace to one another and to the community around us. I’ll see you Sunday!
